The Municipality is asking for your feedback on the Draft Backyard Hen By-law.
Currently, only Rural-zoned properties are allowed to keep hens.
The new by-law would EXPAND this to allow backyard hens on smaller residential properties throughout the municipality, for personal use only.
Key Points of the Draft By-law:
- Hens Only – Roosters are not allowed
- Number of hens allowed:
- Up to 5 hens within town limits (see Schedule B for details)
- Up to 10 hens outside of town, on lots up to 5 acres
- Up to 30 hens on lots larger than 5 acres outside of town
- No selling of eggs or meat
- All hens must be kept in enclosed coops and runs
- Hen waste cannot go in your regular household garbage
- Coops must be set back from water sources, wells, and property lines
Already Rural-zoned? This by-law won’t affect you. If you’re unsure about your zoning, please contact sebbs@sebbs.ca or call 705-507-1177. (Most properties over 15 acres are Rural.)
