French River, Ontario - February 16, 2024: Mayor Gisèle Pageau and the French River Council are thrilled to announce the commencement of the much-anticipated French River Affordable Senior Housing Project. The announcement and presentation occurred at 9:30 am on Friday, February 16, at the Municipal Office, marking a significant step in enhancing the living standards for seniors in the community.

Recent demographic data reveals a significant and steady increase in the median age of French River’s population, which now stands at 58 years. This upward trend, observed over the past two decades, indicates the community is experiencing a pronounced shift toward an older demographic.

Recognizing the evolving needs of its residents, the Municipality of French River is responding proactively with the launch of the French River Senior Housing Project, which offers a blend of comfort and convenience with its strategic location adjacent to the municipal building, ensuring easy access to essential amenities.

The new 30-unit independent living facility addresses the growing requirement for affordable senior housing that allows French River residents over 55 to thrive within their community. The affordable housing complex for seniors will be under the caring stewardship of a not-for-profit board. This dedicated group, comprised of residents and council members, is committed to ensuring a supportive and community-focused living environment for seniors.

By aligning the project with the demographic reality of an aging population, the French River Council demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that the Municipality’s infrastructure and services evolve in step with its changing population. The Affordable Senior Housing Project is a testament to French River’s forward-thinking approach to community planning and its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.

The project, featuring a mix of one- and two-bedroom suites, will include indoor and outdoor common space within the building and additional individual space for each unit, ensuring a blend of communal engagement and personal privacy. Descon Construction Limited, financial consultant Dave Butler, and planning consultant Keith Harriman were awarded the contract to design and build the affordable housing project.

Mayor’s Quote: Mayor Pageau emphasizes the project’s commitment to the local economy: “Our goal is not only to provide comfortable and affordable living options for our seniors but also to boost our local economy by engaging with local trades and suppliers. This project is a testament to our dedication to the French River community.”
